The Commuter Review:
The Commuter is a gripping movie full of suspense and thrills to keep you entertained. Michael (Liam Neeson) is an insurance salesman that commutes to work every day, following the same daily routine. He loses his job and is later greeted by a mysterious woman who offers him something he cannot refuse, on the same train he catches every day. The woman tells him there is a passenger that doesn’t belong there, he has to find who it is before the last stop. As he attempts to find the passenger, a violent plan starts to unfold and things take a turn for the worse, involving him being incorporated with criminal activities. Multiple plot twists create suspense involving Michael and everyone on board.
Liam Neeson (Taken) excels as the confused Michael MacCauley who is the main focal point within the movie. Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel) adds incredible mystery to the plot as Joanna who starts the suspense. Patrick Wilson (The A-Team) stars as the not so straightforward friend of Michael’s as Alex Murphy. There are other various and effective appearances from Sam Neil (Jurassic Park) and Jonathon Banks (Breaking Bad) that contribute to making the film a thrilling experience.
The director, Jaume Collet Serra, is a master of suspense and creating such a brilliant thriller. He has collaborated with Liam on multiple occasions to create similar feature films. One example is Non-Stop, The Commuter takes a similar approach with a similar setting, a train instead of a plane.
The film can be at sometimes overwhelming with everything going on, the un-realism and plot holes may discourage people off the movie. The movie does also start off quite slow but eventually builds its way up to give a constant feeling of suspense. However, we couldn’t help but notice that more tension could have been created in multiple parts of the film.
Overall, The Commuter is a crowd-pleaser with quality acting that creates a stunning 90 minutes of suspense. You will not be disappointed with this movie’s ambition to become one of the top thrillers of this year. Well worth a watch if you enjoy being left on the edge of your seat.
